Paesaggio della Valle Antigorio in Val d’Ossola

Valle Antigorio: the gateway to Formazza and Alpe Devero

Valle Antigorio, a Latin land between Baceno, Crodo and Premia: the Giant’s Kettles of Croveo and a history marked by plague and witch trials.

The Valle Antigorio is one of Ossola’s side valleys, a land of Latin language and culture that serves as an antechamber to the Walser Val Formazza, located directly to the north along the same valley corridor.

The municipalities of the valley

Valle Antigorio includes the municipalities of Baceno (with the hamlet of Croveo), Premia, Crodo, Montecrestese, Varzo, Trasquera and Crevoladossola. In Croveo, a hamlet of Baceno, visitors can admire the Giant’s Kettles: fascinating circular erosion formations carved into the rock by the force of water, along with evocative inlets and hemispherical cavities.

Plague and witch trials

The history of the valley has not been without difficult moments: among the harshest were the plague of the 17th century and the witch trials of Croveo. In 1647, Baceno and the other centres of Valle Antigorio obtained exemption from feudal investiture, an important step in the administrative history of the area.

The gateway to Val Formazza

Travelling north through Valle Antigorio, the area gradually changes name and character: one enters Val Formazza, Walser and German-speaking, while Antigorio remains firmly rooted in Latin and Romance culture. This transition between languages and cultures within just a few kilometres is one of the most fascinating features of the upper Val d’Ossola.

Antigorio, between Baceno and Alpe Devero

From Baceno, visitors can reach Alpe Devero, while Crodo is known for its mineral waters. To learn more about the valley’s history, refer to the Lake District Tourist Board.

Descending towards the valley floor, the vineyards of Val d’Ossola offer one final stop with a tasting.

A heritage of small villages

Each of the settlements in Valle Antigorio retains its own distinct character: from Crodo, with its mineral waters, to Baceno, the gateway to the upper valley. Travelling through this valley by car or bicycle makes it possible to observe the gradual change in the landscape at close hand, from the vineyards on the valley floor to the first high-altitude pastures.

A transitional environment between different cultures

Valle Antigorio is also an area of linguistic and cultural transition, where Italian and local dialects of Latin origin gradually meet the Walser and Germanic influences that characterise the upper part of the valley: a subtle cultural boundary still perceptible today in place names and local traditions.

A landscape in constant transformation

Travelling through Valle Antigorio from south to north, attentive visitors can observe how the agricultural landscape of the valley floor gradually gives way to an increasingly mountainous environment, up to the first signs of the Walser culture that characterises the upper part of the valley: a transition that can be seen in both the architecture and the vegetation.

An itinerary for all seasons

Valle Antigorio can be visited at any time of year, with a character that changes markedly from season to season: summer is ideal for excursions towards the upper valley, while autumn gives the broadleaf woods on the valley floor spectacular colours, making every visit a different experience depending on the time chosen.

One final observation: few other routes in Val d’Ossola make it possible to observe, in a single day’s journey, a linguistic and cultural transition as distinct as the one experienced when travelling up Valle Antigorio towards Val Formazza.

One valley, two languages, one extraordinary beauty.

Latin on one side, Walser on the other: one remarkable valley.

A valley of transition, between two cultures and two languages.

One final consideration regarding Valle Antigorio: its role as a link between different cultures makes it an interesting case study also for those who study the history of Alpine migrations.

A border valley to be explored with curiosity.

Borders that unite more than they divide.

Valle Antigorio is therefore one of the most evocative gateways to the upper Val d’Ossola, an area where Alpine traditions intertwine with a landscape that changes radically with altitude, from the vineyards on the valley floor to the high-altitude mountain pastures.
