Tramonto sul Lago Maggiore nei pressi di Oggebbio

Oggebbio: fifteen villages on Lake Maggiore

Oggebbio, a municipality of fifteen villages on Lake Maggiore: from Gonte, with the tallest bell tower in the Upper Verbano area, to Cadessino's 15th-century oratory.

Oggebbio is not a single village, but a municipality made up of around fifteen small hamlets scattered between the shores of Lake Maggiore and the mid-slope plateau of the mountain behind it.

A municipality of fifteen villages

Each hamlet tells a different part of local history: Barbé was known for the excellence of the wines produced there, Resega was home to the mill on the Bugnano stream that served all the villages in the area, Quarcino was the centre of the timber trade, Mozzola cultivated olive trees, while Spasolo served as a port on the lake. Dumera is the highest hamlet, Pieggio preserves a beautiful square with a large washhouse, and Cadevecchio stands out for its fountain and the frescoes on the façades of its houses.

Gonte, the municipal seat, and its bell tower

Gonte is the municipal seat and home to the parish church of San Pietro: its 42-metre bell tower is the tallest in the Upper Verbano area and dominates the landscape throughout the Oggebbio area.

The Cadessino Oratory, a national monument

In the hamlet of Cadessino stands the Oratory of the Nativity of Mary, dating back to the 15th century and declared a national monument: inside, it preserves a fine cycle of 15th-century frescoes and a high altar in polychrome marble, among the most important artistic testimonies in the entire municipality.

Oggebbio on Lake Maggiore

Oggebbio lies along the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, between Cannero Riviera and Ghiffa. To learn more about the history of its villages, refer to the Comune di Oggebbio.

From Oggebbio, it is also possible to reach the Ossola hinterland in a short time, with its vineyards and tastings.

A mosaic of small communities

Oggebbio’s polycentric structure, made up of fifteen distinct hamlets, reflects a settlement pattern typical of the lakeside areas of Lake Maggiore, where communities historically organised themselves into small, independent clusters rather than a single urban centre: a legacy that still makes it interesting to explore the municipality hamlet by hamlet, each with its own traditions and history.

An area to explore by boat

Many of Oggebbio’s hamlets that overlook the lake directly can also be reached by water, an option that makes it possible to appreciate from a different perspective the succession of small harbours, gardens sloping down towards the lake and old fishermen’s houses that characterise this stretch of the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore.

A community connected to the lake

Oggebbio’s identity remains deeply connected to Lake Maggiore, not only because of the landscape but also because of traditional economic activities, from fishing to small-scale boat-related crafts: a relationship with the water that continues to define the character of this polycentric municipality.

One final note: Oggebbio’s polycentric structure requires more time to explore than a compact village, but rewards those who are patient with authentic views far from the main tourist flows.

Fifteen souls, one great municipality on the lake.

Fifteen villages, one municipality to explore at a leisurely pace.

One final note on Oggebbio: its structure of fifteen hamlets offers a model of dispersed tourism, capable of spreading visitors across a wider area rather than concentrating them in a single centre.

Fifteen souls, one municipality to explore step by step.

Fifteen souls, one municipality to explore slowly.

Oggebbio, with its fifteen settlements scattered along the slope overlooking Lake Maggiore, offers one of the most authentic landscapes on the Piedmontese shore, far from the busiest tourist flows. Each hamlet retains its own distinctive features, among olive groves, historic villas and small harbours, in a mosaic well worth exploring at a leisurely pace.

Moving between Oggebbio’s different hamlets offers ever-changing views of the lake, in a landscape that changes with every bend.
